CASTRO (Chiloe): capital of the province of Chiloé again from 1982 with something more than 20,000 inhabitants, Castro is located beside a fiord of waters protected in the interior sea and central area of the Big Island of Chiloé. It had a commercial peak with the prosperity of the timber activity at the end of the XIX century. There are numerous walks to do leaving from this city: To the island Quinchao, going by Dalcahue and Achao, traveling the “wool belt” (center of crafts and fabrics) being able to visit several churches, all very particular ones, some of them built by the middle of the XVIII century; to the island Lemuy going by Chonchi, small town of picturesque staggered construction also called “the city of three floors.” |
