CHAITEN (basket of water) has 3,300 inhabitants approximately and it is, from principles of 1981, capital of the Palena province. At the end of the decade of 1930, it began to receive a small ship every month of the government enterprise Ferronave. In 1946 begins the construction of the road toward the lake Yelcho and Chaiten starts to grow commercially when supplying the colonists of the Yelcho, Palena and Futaleufú. Today it has an aerodrome, port and ramp where the ferry arrives from Chonchi. You also arrives from the north, by the Southern highway that in that tract comes from Caleta Gonzalo, where the ferries of Hornopirén arrive. |
