EL CHALTEN is the indigenous name for the Fitz Roy mount. Located to the north of the noroccidental end of the lake Viedma inside the Viedma Area of the National Park Los Glaciares. You arrive by the national route #40 until connecting with the provincial route #23 which toward west skirts the north coast of the mentioned lake.

In the city just a few hundred people inhabit but they receive many tourists in the summery season especially the fanatics of the mountaineering, since it is the starting point for the ascent to the famous Fitz Roy 3,400 meters high, to which the villagers call Chalten.

El Chalten has several hotels, restaurants, National Park office and tourist information, where one can find out about the estancias (ranchs) of the area that they offer lodging and the possibility of carrying out a tourism completely detached of the civilization. From El Chalten there are countless quantity of trips that can be carried out: fishing, horse riding, trekking and for the experts, the ascents to the Cerro Torre and Mount Fitz Roy.
